In the reading “Working “By Studs Terkel I believe what he is trying to state that work is being generated by technology, or better seems as computers, but nothing bring more satisfaction then to have performed physical labor and completed a tangle task. He gives examples of different professions and the satisfaction each feel in the physical job. Not be though that these physical job were short on technology, like factory machines or devices to ease in their labor, but they required a larger physical aspect of performance than those from digital world and computer like jobs. He explains a man work ethic is not based on their age but on its determination and discipline in the capitalistic society. Ralph Helstein explains that work is anything that has value, you should not pursue what is going to make you money but what your passion is, the work that will create that discipline and determination in you to succeed in a capitalist society. Due to the factory like lines of management there is always someone above someone in business today. This keeps everyone accountable for and productive. Society adapts different methods to fulfill this passion and drive, just to be happy and feel satisfaction of hard work.
The story of Bud Freeman relates too what Terkel is communicating about since he discusses what it is like to be a Full-time musician. The discipline, dedication and determination he has only comes from having a passion for the profession. You complete the task and dedicate the appropriate time and research needed to succeed in the career choice. Work is anything value to a citizen’s life. The person places the value on the work by the morals and environment they are living in.
In my opinion, this is how I personally pursue my career and educational life. I am determined, disciplined and dedicated to my goal of achieving success. I view success by the value I have placed on my job. It’s my passion and I perform in a capitalistic manner. I network with clients and contacts so have them view me useful, I administrate worker with some factory line management and pay them according to the time provided and wake up every day with my goal to achieve monetary and valued in my career choice.
In the Reading “The Protestant Ethic and The Spirit of Capitalism” By Max weber describe what he thinks about Benjamin Franklin Spirit of Capitalism subject.
Rationalism – replacement of traditions, values, and emotions as motivators for behavior in society with rational, calculated ones
Benjamin Franklin Illustrates the spirit of Capitalism by saying men have to be honest and have a business attitude. Your time is valuable, the trust and respect you show with the community gives you credit which is valuable and this personality can have you creating more money. This individual with these particular traits are seen as success which is the ultimate goal creating a profit, a capitalist, creating the Spirit of capitalism. Individuals with this personality enjoy living comfortable lives sometimes in luxury of objects but primarily like saving money and putting it away.
In the Capitalist community is just like the jungle or New York City only the strongest survive.
Traditionalism is the opposite of capitalism or pre-capitalism. Citizen will only work enough to receive the money needed to support themselves and family. This happens by paying by the amount of work given. When the opposite happens, less pay for amount of work, it can work but with limit because the wage can become so low its insufficient to support themselves and family. For this method to function for capitalism citizens must seek education. The enterpriser has the mind and spirit of a capitalism and perfumes capitalist activities. Before the organization of rational capitalism and the spirit of capitalism were represented by simple living, socialization and work somehow were changed by a more frugal living, different maneuvering of social life and a more determined work determinable created what we know as corporate America today. Profit and power is what in the world we live in today is the dominant way, the capitalistic way. I believe the spirit of capitalist transformed to adaptation of capitalism.
Weber attempts to explain himself by quoting Benjamin franklin and giving examples the support his point of view and this really gives one perspective on the matter. In my opinion, it does not have to involve religion or belief the way an individual handles or administrates his money or views money. We learn the dominant way of money and this system of capitalism is the dominant. It was not a spirit but an adaptation and evolution of time that influenced the capitalist behavior.
In the reading “Wage Labour and Capital “by Karl Marx, explains the Financial and labor agreements made between a capitalist and the worker. The Worker or potential employee has Labour power. Labour power is the task and man power the person can complete for a set period for a set amount of money. The worker than negotiates the its Labour power with the capitalist in exchange for money. This is called price or wage. He spends this wage on food and shelter. This can be translated the worker exchanges his Labour power for food and shelter.
In the example of the Weaver and loom workers, Marx defines what the weaver is truly getting paid for. The weaver is receiving wages based on the agree Labour he perfumes. He does not receive results of his Labour. The results of his task completing skills is the piece of fabric which was created by the yarn provided to him. The yarn came from another laborer or employee called “The loomed “who made the yarn from raw materials. The “Loomers” Employer than sold the yarn to the weaver’s employer. He then provided the yarn to the weaver who exchange his man power to convert the yarn to fabric.
Karl Marx, continues to explain the capitalist method of production and reason why. Community changed as needs for production increased. This made the community change both materially and socially. What the worker produces and the profit of what he produces is the surplus value. The worker does not receive compensation from such profit.
The worker does not exchange his labor for commodity only but also for the satisfaction of living life. For the small moments human enjoy like sharing a bed, being part of a social group and caring for others. These things can be provided to him by exchange of labor for wages. These wages he uses for the exchange of these experience.
History shows Labour ownership was not always exchanged for wages. It was purchased once and never renegotiated. This was called slavery. Capitalist or slave owners had slaves to complete all the daily operation of any land or industry of their ownership. Now era the endeavor is completed by rented Labour owners in exchange for wages or commodities.
In conclusion, the relationship between “capital and wage Labour” is Labour –owner or employee gets hired by the capitalist or employer to complete a job for a particular period of time and wage. This wage is then exchanges for commodities.
According to Harry Braverman “In The Making of the U.S working class”, we qualify workers according to social relation the individual has to the work or occupation. Explaining the difference in who is a working class and who is not.
Harry Braverman explains a common ground that creates this class are the people who are hired by others to work, they don’t own the task being completed, they are just rented to complete it. (pg.15-16). The employer is not considered part of the working class as he owns the materials and mass production from which he profit . The profit made the employer retains. The Employees are completing the mass production so they are considered the working class.
Braverman continues to then dissect even further the working class into two groups, The Productive working class employees and The Unproductive working class employs. The employee who are productive are the ones who make something physical to be sold and profited from. The unproductive workers are ones who deal with the organization and paper work of the mass production. (pg. 27 & 30).
He considered the unproductive working class employee are now considered “The Blue Collar”. The productive working class employee are not considered “The White Collar”. The Unproductive working class employee are occupations at real estate, insurance, governments, advertising, accounting, brokerage etc. (pg. 32). These unproductive working class employees were not changed from “White Collar “to “Blue Collar” by their desire to advance but changes in the economy and living methods (pg.32). This method, Unproductive Working “of work have a particular order in which is organize. This method being the need to mass employee = 2X mass production = 4x mass profit. (pg.31) Productive working class employee are the employees of Factories, farms, assembly lines, transportation etc. (pg.27-28). The increase in productive working class employee has been steady since 1820 but it has slowed down due to the increase in unemployment in the general society. (pg.28)
Braverman concludes by stating unemployed is not the cause of neither unproductive working class employee or productive working class employee, but because of the slow rise of new occupation or factories opening for production and change in needs of the population. (pg.33). Studies have shown unemployment are higher after recession than during when occupation production were being created to consequence be the increase in economy (pg.33).
Braverman adds on to say the working class American , in the end , it needs to looked at the way it forms humanity , battle , methods which sustain the most important desire for people. Giving society the thought of working hard to achieve their desire for better. ( pg.35)
Hello my name is Mariela Eduardo . I am currently working in the Child care business , I am the owner and provider of First Bloom Group Family Day Care . We have 6 locations in the Bronx , two under First Bloom Day Care name and 4 under other names.
My grandparents were and are hard workers . My grandparents on my father side and my grandfather are and were farmers. My grandmother on my mother side was the towns sewer , she was the first to be able to alter pants and clothing .
My parents have demonstrated to me what hard work can lead to and how it looks like. My father was a chef at an Italian restaurant. My mom was a supermarket owner . She owned Luisa Mini Market from 1993-2012 , when she sold/lost her business due to 9/11 , she returned to do what she did before which was home attend/ home health aide. She is currently a Nanny to autistic child.
My ancestry has made me a more appreciative of my heritage and the knowledge to know hard work is necessary life. They showed me that the more knowledge you had of your profession the more you will be paid for, and the less you will have to work and live life. This has pushed me to work hard and do what I knew the best, child care and business, learn the most I can and work hard to success. Have enough to live life and leave meaning behind it.
Work can be one of three things for me. First, it can be a means of survival and hate or complaisant life. In this scenario you only make enough to pay bills and, if you cut back and save enough, you can take a budget vacation which you hate. OR second, it can be a passion where I work hard but I love what I do and anything that it permits me to do is great by me. This is why I pointed myself to a career I love already doing and brought me a lot of happiness. This brought me to happiness with everything it came with, Long hours, underpaid at time and life changing scares and still look forward to the next day at work.
I agree with you when you say Human Capital or Knowledge capital should be considered for Central Education plan . I just also understand that it has a lot of work to be done to it for it to be equal for everyone. It discriminates and underfunded some schools while others are over funded . Some neighborhood have better chance for student succeeding and other don’t just because of income, but all these are problems I consider to be economic and discrimination, if all given the same opportunity of education we will be all in better neighborhoods.
